19th Annotation Retreat In Daily Life Training Program

Advanced Certificate:
Directing the 19th Annotation Retreat in Everyday Life

The 19th Annotation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, referenced often as the 19th Annotation or Ignatian Retreat in Daily Life, is an increasingly popular retreat option for persons seeking the experience of the Spiritual Exercises. The 19th Annotation allows for persons to complete the Spiritual Exercises over approximately 9-10 months, engaging in Ignatian prayer practices, scriptural readings, and meditations, while meeting regularly with a spiritual director.

WVIS offers this training in a completely online format that is both instructional and experiential. The training is designed to equip experienced Spiritual Directors with the knowledge and skills needed to guide an individual through the 19th Annotation Retreat.

Regardless of whether you are a member of laity, religious, or clergy (of any faith tradition), if you are an experienced spiritual director, this training is for you. This is an Advanced Certificate program and consists of lectures, required reading, group process, theological reflection, and formational experiences. Emphasis is placed on the role of the spiritual director and the essential elements of Ignatian Discernment.

Participants will explore the following areas:

  • Discernment of readiness of a candidate for making the Exercises and preparing them to begin
  • Awareness of and insight into the dynamics of each of the Weeks in the Ignatian Exercises
  • Overview of Scripture texts appropriate for each Week of the Exercises
  • Insight into all Major Reflections in the Exercises
  • In-depth work with the Discernment of Spirits, the Rules of Discernment and Ignatian Decision Making
  • A growing appreciation and exposure to the charism of Ignatian Spirituality

Upon completion, you will receive a certificate signifying that you have met the requirements of this training to guide others through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.

What to expect:

As part of each weekend (held online via Zoom), you will participate in small and large group discussions that facilitate in-depth reflection on your own experience of the Exercises as it relates to the dynamics of the Exercises.

In addition to the material covered each weekend, there are additional resources (books and/or articles) that are required reading.

By registering for this program, you are committing to selecting your supervisor (before the end of the training) and to being supervised (by that person) for the first two individuals you journey with through the 19th Annotation. This involves meeting with your supervisor on a weekly basis (supervision is not included in the offering for the training program).
